ADF: Traumatic Stress Syndrome Course
ACPMH conducts the Traumatic Stress Syndrome course in conjunction with the Mental Health, Psychology and Rehabilitation Branch. This course runs for two weeks and provides training in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder and a range of comorbid mental health difficulties. Participation is limited to Australian Defence Force personnel.
Aims
The TSS course aims to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide care for ADF personnel who have experienced traumatic stress reactions in a military environment. The course provides:
- A theoretical background
- Practical experience in the recognition, assessment, evaluation and management of individuals who present with traumatic stress reactions resulting from military experience

- World experts in the field of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
The course has received accreditation through the University of Melbourne.
Course objectives
The objectives of the TSS course are to:
- Recognise when a person has experienced a traumatic event
- Recognise the clinical symptoms of traumatic stress and the psychological consequences
- Assess the level of distress and degree of social and occupational impairment in a person suffering traumatic stress
- Design and implement a management plan for an individual with a traumatic stress disorder
- Identify when, and to whom a patient should be referred
- Implement preventative health measures for traumatic stress for the defence population and health professionals
How do I get on the course?
The TSS course is designed for ADF health service providers (i.e., you must be working for the ADF). Individuals or organisations who are not part of the ADF but are interested in courses in this area should contact ACPMH directly.
